In my career as a psychologist, I found I was being moved profoundly by people’s stories. So, in 2015, I left my practice in psychology to be an artist because art was an extension of connecting with people in a different way. As a psychologist, I’d gotten good at listening and helping people uncover the emotional center of their feelings.  I value giving those emotions expression. My art allows me to showcase emotions connected with interactions between people and their surroundings.  My goal is always to make the viewer stop and connect with the story. I received my doctorate in 1981 from Michigan State University and have been a practicing clinical psychologist in Orange County since 1982.

As a psychologist, I have always been fascinated with people’s stories.  I try and paint the stories I see around me. The intricacies of relationships and the tenderness of feelings expressed in a casual touch or glance. The closeness one feels with others, the look of quiet contemplation, the emotions portrayed in a stance, or a quiet walk with your loved one: these are of special interest to me. Living in Southern California, I paint the life stories around me, these are often on the beach. Sometimes the stories are elicited from my travels around the world.

I started taking art classes in 2000, at Irvine Valley College, Orange Coast College and Saddleback Community College, and have continued learning from workshops around the country.  While I work in acrylic, watercolor, and pastel, I especially like the challenge of digital media. I taught myself to paint digitally using powerful programs such as Painter  2016,  I got absorbed in the process of  learning from amazing teachers, Skip Allen, Tim Shelbourne and Karen Bonaker at the Digital Art Academy.

“Digital painting is very much like the interactions with people, it is not one-dimensional, I can move from oil to acrylic to watercolor to pens – all in a single painting. I can use realism or expressionism, be tight or loose – all within one painting. Just like with real media, I get into the zone and get lost in my subject. I love the ability to move between mediums, first painting digitally, using photos as reference, then printing the painting on canvas only to continue with acrylics or other mixed media”

Because I am more interested in the feelings, the paintings are often named for the emotions and situations portrayed rather than the individual person. I hope the observer will project his or her own emotions onto the scene.
